Black Panther was a three-time winner at last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards. The Marvel Studios’ film took home the awards for production design (Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart), costume design (Ruth E. Carter), and visual effects.

Black Panther was nominated for a total of 12 Critics’ Choice Awards last night. Like the Golden Globes last week, the Critics’ Choice Awards do not have much bearing on Oscar® voting, since the membership bodies are completely different.

Just about every major guild outside of the DGA has recognized Black Panther. It should pop up in several categories, including Best Picture, when the Academy announces the Oscar® nominees on January 22.

The Critics’ Choice victory in visual effects comes as a surprise. Avengers: Infinity War was thought to be the overwhelming favorite in the category, but critics saw it differently. Infinity War should have won, but Black Panther‘s upset here is not as egregious as some are making it out to be.

The rhinos weren’t great and the final fight between Black Panther and Killmonger left a little to be desired, but most of the visual effects shots in the film were outstanding. There may not have been any individual element as impressive as Infinity War‘s Thanos, but visual effects played a huge role in creating the look of Wakanda, among several other fantastic feats.
