John Wick Hex

The unforgivably brutal character John Wick is receiving his own video-game coming soon. It is being developed by an indie team and it is a turn-based strategy game.

Bithell Games are the company behind Thomas Was Alone, Subsurface Circular and Volume and you can expect a similar stylistic charm to be present. The graphics are not hyper realistic, instead appearing more like a comic-book with a vibrant and colourful palette which is incredibly refreshing. The gameplay is also far more tactical, like a “fight-choreographed chess [game] brought to life”, which should add to that unique feel.

Everything in the game takes place on hex-shaped tiles with room for only one occupant in that space at a time. Ammo is also handled realistically like in the movies as John Wick will have to find the time to reload or throw away his weapon. To top it off, you cannot horde an armory like in every single RPG known to man.

John Wick has, since his puppy died in 2014, been slaughtering people left right and center but along that journey there have been other characters who lent their hand to his unending murder-fest. The two fan-favorites, Winston and Charon, are present alongside Wick and they are far more than just recognizable faces. The actors (Ian McShane and Lance Reddick respectively) themselves are returning to lend their voices to the characters.

However, the story itself is entirely new and is not based on the movies’ overarching plot. The game takes place before the films. This means that there will likely be some new lore and world-building to unpack which will only add to the layers of mystery that the first three movies have built. We will be seeing a John Wick before he lost his dog, or his wife.

At a measly price of £15.99, John Wick Hex seems like a no-brainer. The only downside is that there is no release date as of yet and no confirmation on whether console’s will be blessed with this movie’s spinoff.
